Hey guys and gals, not been on here for ages and i do apologise, plenty of job changes etc etc, doing lots of shows at the moment travelling to barrow 3 times a week and generally watching far too much television. which is good as it gives me something to talk about! I can't believe how many opportunities i have missed to talk on here about the x factor, strictly, corrie, the apprentice and all the other classic tv moments that have been part of 2010. plus there have been so many good films i have seen this year which i wish i had told you all about so i'll try and recap my favourite tv of the year on here plus my favourite films. and as we should all be aware by now that the time of year is upon us again, my favourite events ever!!! IT'S AWARDS SEASON!!! oh my god, in june i thought that the oscars/globes/sags were gonna be lame this year no other film except inception had really jumped out at me as being Oscar worthy, but hollywood do it all the time, anything worth watching comes out in NOV/DEC so it's fresh in the audiences mind. anyway, i digress, heres 2010 in the shell of a little nut, lets say a peanut.
Best Films: (some of these have been watched through sources other than the cinema, naughty but neccessary)
The Social Network: The film about facebook. when people first learned that there was going to be a film about facebook it was met with some laughs and a lot of Why? comments. clearly people thought it was going to be about someone being on facebook playing those stupid farming games, or a marathon of Bejewelled Blitz, poking people and status updates. What they didn't realise is that it was actually the "true" story of how facebook was founded by then college student "Mark Zuckerberg" now a billionaire for his troubles. Apparently a stolen idea and lack of ethics etc led Mark to be sued for $600 million by his best friend and co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The film was directed by David Fincher, to me this man can do no wrong. Fight Club, The Game, Se7en. the man's a genius of film making and this film, just because it's about something which is so common place in everyones lives is no different. a sharp script, great acting and fantastic score made in one of the most entertaining films i have watched in a while. Highly Recommended.
Inception: If you haven't seen this film by now you are missing one of the greatest films of all time. Currently sitting at number 6 in the imdb.com Top 250 films ever. the story of planting ideas into peoples dreams is a taught action thriller and visually a masterpiece. The directing and script by Christopher Nolan is amazing and the acting performances, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt are fantastic. it real is a work of art, i just worry about it's chances of winning gold because it came out as a summer blockbuster. it deserves to win big!
The Kids are All Right: having loved Juno and Away we go, The Kids Are All Right was right up my street. The story of a lesbian couple (played by Julianne Moore and Annette Bening) whose children decide to seek out their sperm donor father, played by Mark Ruffalo. I really enjoy Rufallo in most of his films and think he is a very underused actor. The film really is Annette and Julianne's though. They play the role of a lesbian couple with as much empathy and pathos as any other on screen couple. You sympathise with both characters and are rooting for them to stay as the happy family unit they once were, i think the best thing about the way they portray the parts is how they don't make a big deal about the lesbian part, they are just like any other couple dealing with the ups and downs of marriage and we feel how real the pain is for both of them, a lot of this can be credited to the fantastic script by Lisa Cholodenko
. I hope Annette finally wins an oscar this year, lets just hope Hilary Swank doesn't steal it from her again.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: I was actually blown away by how good this movie made me feel, it's all out entertainment and is utterly original and fantastically brilliant. Kieran Culkin absolutely steals the film for me.
The Girl with the Dragon tattoo: I loved this film and can't wait for the american version to come out, i just hope that people watch the Swedish Original as it really is a thrilling movie.
The Town: this film directed by Ben Affleck was a great thriller/action movie. Anything Jeremy Renner does from now on i will be watching and he is great as a supporting part in this movie. The cast are all pretty fantastic really and Blake Lively, the one off of that gossipy girl program, gives a revelationary turn. The action is well timed and not over the top and the script again by Ben Affleck leads the action along nicely. A great Saturday Night Popcorn movie.
Toy Story 3: I cried. There i said it. but if you didnt you are made of stone. When you think that Toy Story, the film that changed animation forever, in the same way Snow White did in 1937, came out in 1995, when i was a mere 11 years old. I have pretty much grown up with the characters of Buzz and Woody. The 3rd film sees the passing of time for the toys too. The toys faithful owner Andy is off to college and no longer has a need for the toys, but like us, he still thinks they need to be in his life somehow, so he decides to put them in the loft, unfortunately his mum mistakes the bag of toys as a bag for donation to the local Nursery. There the toys are welcome as friends by the leader of the nursery toys Lotso, Lotso however has other plans for the toys and keeps them prisoner in the room with all the youngest children where they are drawn on, pulled apart and pretty much, not played with very nicely. The film was everything you could have wanted it to be in the last of the series, we were left with a feeling that the chapter was closed for Andy, but the story of the toys lives would carry on without us. As Andy goes off to college, we go off and watch documentaries about the Iraq war or Swedish films about Vampires, but there will always be part of our lives that was changed by these little toys, and we'll always keep the toy box open.
CatFish: not going to say anything about the plot/premise story etc. is it real? is it a hoax? who knows? you just have to watch it. It's the most compelling film of the last 5 years!
TV
What great moments there has been this year on tv with the continuing excellence of the US dramas and comedies such as personal favourite Mad Men, the sublime Nurse Jackie and the brilliant Good Wife. Comedy "Community" and the greatly received "Modern Family" are also personal highlights. also The United states of Tara which is amazing, still can't believe that british tv hasnt picked it up yet. Glee is as gay as a box of gays, and Family Guy may be losing their touch with too many hit and miss episodes. The Cleveland Show failed to really impress me. But The best tv moments for me are:
The End of Big Brother/Ultimate Big Brother: i thought the last series was brilliant and Josie was a worthy winner. and the entire production of Ultimate Big Brother was really well done with Davina finishing off a landmark series very well.
Live Corrie: i thought the production on this was amazing and it was hard to tell it was live. a great job done by all involved.
Emmerdale: I thought the coming out story of Aaron was played really well by Danny Miller and the supporting characters and script were of a great standard. Emmerdale is really stepping up it's game.
Lost: another finale we had to cope with and a lot of discussions as to the ending. I personally thought that the last one was really good and the way they finished it was brilliant, of course people are going to be upset that not all questions were answered but who cares, some things are best left a mystery, like what the hell did Bill Murphy whisper to Scarlett Johannson at the end of lost in translation? if you ever actually find out, you'll only be dissappointed.
Him and Her: this comedy tucked away on bbc three has the makings of a hit. the acting and script is so natural and it is genuinely funny
another comedy i have enjoyed this year is Miranda, when i saw Miranda Hart guest on Have I Got News For You i wasnt too impressed, but seeing people rave about this sitcom made me tune in and i laughed from start to finish. i love this woman!!!
Desperate Housewives has got it's edge back, and this current season has been a great return to form.
The X factor and Strictly both annoyed and entertained and Stuart Baggs on the Apprentice made me want to self harm.
Cant wait for the awards to be announced and i'll be posting my usual who will and who should win once i have another free day and i have watched all of the films up for votes. although early viewings are saying Social Network for best picture, The Kids are all right for best screenplay, jennifer lawrence for best actress....and the others i'm remaining silent til i've seen them all!!!!
peace and love, and be careful out there
Paul
